Hockey: UBC Opens Pre-Season With Win Over Shenzen

August 22 2018 Vancouver- The UBC Thunderbirds women’s hockey team bounced back with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Shenzhen hockey club at Father Bauer Arena Wednesday night, evening the three-game exhibition series at one game apiece following a 3-0 defeat two evenings prior.

UBC asserted their dominance early in the first period, scoring on just their second shot of the night. A turnover in Shenzhen’s end had the puck pop up into the air and Madison Patrick was able to knock it down before dropping it back in the slot to Shay-Lee McConnell whose quick wrist shot sailed over the right pad of Shenzhen goaltender Han Lin.

The T-Birds kept up the pressure, dominating the first 10 minutes of the period while not even allowing a single shot against Tory Micklash. The Chinese visitors eventually came tired of playing keep up and drew a penalty, allowing UBC’s dominant power play to go to work. The ‘Birds wasted no time as they extended their lead to two with a redirected shot from Mathea Fischer with 7:15 remaining in the frame.

UBC would get into some penalty trouble of their own in the last five minutes drawing three calls in fast fashion to allow Shenzhen two separate five-on-three opportunities. The visitors were able to get their first shots of the evening on the power play but Micklash stood tall in net for UBC as she deflected all chances, most of which came from defenders who closed in as the cycle progressed. Shenzhen was dominated by the Thunderbirds for most of the period, although their power play looked like something that could bring them success later on.

It seemed as though Shenzhen reinvented themselves between periods. After taking ten minutes in the first period to mount any sort of attack, the visitors found themselves in a back and forth game to start the second.

Although there were few shots by either team in the beginning of the period, both teams had spells of possession. Following a T-Birds two-on-one that was denied by Han Lin, UBC ended up back on the penalty kill. This time around though, Shenzhen dominated possession on the power play and were able to hold the home team in their own end for much of their advantage but were unable to convert. UBC would eventually add to their lead late in the period with a power play goal from Mikayla Ogrodniczuk whose shot from the point found the net after a controlled cycle with Karlee Mazor and Hannah Clayton-Carroll.

The third kept the trend of the first two periods. Shenzhen would begin the frame on the power play and their special teams proved to be unsuccessful yet again. The visitors went 0-for-7 on the powerplay for the game while UBC on the other hand managed to go two-for-four with the man advantage, with those two goals proving to be the difference in the home side’s 3-1 win. Shenzhen would pull their goalie with five minutes remaining, leading to some scary moments for the UBC defence.

The third game of the series is set for Thursday night at Father Bauer Arena with puck drop of the rubber match at 7:00 p.m. PT.
